Why is Latrobe Health Services the Founding Partner of Shane Warne Legacy?

Because preventative health care should be within reach of everyone.

Shane Warne’s sudden passing after a heart attack, aged 52, was a wake-up call to many across Australia and the world. Heart disease rarely gives a warning. That’s why Shane’s family and friends created the Shane Warne Legacy, so that other Australians would check their heart health while there’s still time to act.

We’re a not-for-profit, member-owned health fund, and invest into our members and communities, not shareholders' pockets. Free Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks pick up cardiometabolic and diabetes risk early, and that’s one of the best things we can put that money into.

What difference do Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks make?

This is the part we’re proudest of. Knowing your numbers changes what you do about them.

IPSOS research commissioned by Latrobe Health Services in 2026 surveyed more than 1,200 Australians aged 18 to 65. It compared people who had taken a free Shane Warne Legacy Health Check with people who had not, looking at health literacy, motivation and behaviour.

Here’s the proof.

• 85% of participants took positive action for their health after their check, rising to 91% for people with a health risk factor.
• 52% believe the check improved their health, rising to 60% for regional participants.
• 39% said the check was the single most important thing they had done for their health in 12 months, rising to 43% for regional Australians and 45% for people with a risk factor.
• 94% would recommend a health check to someone else.

Regional participants were more likely than metro participants to make healthier choices after a check. Read that one again, because it’s one of the biggest reasons why we do this. Regional and rural Australia is where preventative health is hardest to reach, and it’s where a few minutes at a health station does the most good.

How did Latrobe Health’s heart health journey start?

Close to home. In June 2022, Latrobe Health Services launched the Gippsland Healthy Hearts Study with SiSU Health, Wesfarmers Health and Novartis. The 500-person trial took place across Gippsland and revealed something hard to ignore: 85.8% of participants had one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

One of those participants was a 38-year-old man in regional Victoria. His health check identified a serious issue and pharmacists called an ambulance. He was then taken to hospital for lifesaving surgery.

So we kept going. From 2023 we took another 2,500 health checks to field days and shopping centres across regional and rural communities. In November 2023 we became the Founding Partner of the Shane Warne Legacy and the health checks went national. From the Boxing Day Test and AFL Gather Round to community events and over 300 Priceline Pharmacy locations, more Australians gained access to a free health check that could help them take action sooner

It started with 500 people in the Latrobe Valley. We’ve now passed half a million free Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks. We’re not stopping there.

What does a Shane Warne Legacy Health Check involve?

It’s self-serve on a Class IIa medical device, and takes a few minutes. The check covers risk factors for cardiometabolic and diabetes: blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, diabetes risk (AUSDRISK) and estimated heart age.

At some events, health checks are supported by clinicians who deliver finger-prick blood tests that provide deeper insights into your blood sugar and cholesterol.

Your results land in the SiSU Health app straight away, so you can take them to your GP if you’d like to follow something up (they’re yours to keep).

Where can I get a free Shane Warne Legacy Health Check?

Free Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks turn up at community events, major sporting events and over 300 Priceline Pharmacies across Australia, and they’re open to everyone aged 18 and over. You don’t need to be a Latrobe Health member (but we’d love you to be).

Field days, shopping centres, the footy, your local Priceline. If it’s somewhere people already are, that’s where we want the health station to be.
